The Myth of the Perfect Practice
Before anything else, let’s dissolve a myth that stops many practitioners before they’ve truly begun: the idea that there is a correct way to practice magic, and that until you find it (or deserve it), you are doing it wrong.

She stood at the gallows and refused to convert.
The British colonial authorities had captured her after two years of eluding them across the hills of Mashonaland. They had tried her for murder, found her guilty, and sentenced her to hang. They offered her, as they had offered her ally Sekuru Kaguvi, the possibility of a Christian death — the consolation of a new religion, the last rite of the civilization that had invaded her land, confiscated her people’s cattle, and imposed a tax on the very act of existing in one’s own home.
Kaguvi converted. Nehanda did not.
She is reported to have wept at his conversion — not out of fear for herself, but out of grief that he had, in her understanding, abandoned his people at the last moment. She died as she had lived: as a medium of the Nehanda spirit, as a Shona woman who had organized a national uprising against the most powerful empire in the world, and as someone who understood that her death was not an ending.
Her last words, as recorded across oral tradition: My bones will rise.

Power without wisdom is a fire without a hearth. Capable of warming everything, capable of burning it all down. The ethical practitioner understands that the same hands that cast a spell must also bear accountability for its consequences.
Why Ethics Matter in Magical Practice
Magic works. Not always as expected, not always in the timeframe we imagine, not always through the channel we anticipate, but it works. And anything that genuinely creates change in the world carries with it the weight of responsibility.
This is why the question of magical ethics is not a peripheral concern, not a beginner’s topic to be graduated from as one advances. It is a living, ongoing inquiry that deepens the longer one practices. The witch who has worked magic for thirty years does not find ethical questions easier than the one who has just begun. They simply carry more experience, more nuance, and more hard-won wisdom to bring to them.
Ethics in magical practice asks us to move consciously. To think before we act. To consider not just what we want, but what we are willing to become in the getting of it.

In April or May of 1856, a fifteen-year-old Xhosa girl went to fetch water from a pool near the mouth of the Gxarha River.
When she returned, she told her uncle that she had met the spirits of three of her ancestors.
The spirits had given her a message for the Xhosa people. If the people destroyed their crops and killed their cattle, every last head of livestock, the foundation of their wealth and their food, the ancestors would rise from the dead. New, uncontaminated cattle would come. New grain would fill the empty storehouses. And a great wind would rise and drive the British settlers into the sea.
The people would be free. The land would be restored. Everything that had been taken would be given back.
Her name was Nongqawuse.
And the story of what happened next is one of the most complex, most devastating, and most theologically significant events in the history of African prophetic tradition.

You wake with the residue of somewhere else on you.
A face you haven’t thought of in years. A house you don’t recognize but felt entirely at home in. A conversation that had no sound but left you with a feeling so specific – grief, or relief, or the particular weight of being told something important – that you carry it into the morning without knowing what you were told.
Most people call this dreaming and move on.
Practitioners call it something else.
The dream state is the most consistent and accessible channel through which the spirit world communicates with us. Not because sleep is magical in itself, but because sleep is the one time when the rational, filtering, categorising mind relaxes its grip long enough for the deeper layers of communication to get through. The signals that your waking mind explains away before they reach consciousness, the subtle impressions, the peripheral presences, the symbolic information that operates below the frequency of ordinary thought, these have full access to you when you’re asleep.

We talk a great deal, in ancestor work, about inherited wounds.
About the patterns that were passed down through blood and behaviour and the quiet catastrophes of family history. The silence that became a survival strategy and outlived the danger that made it necessary. The hypervigilance that protected your grandmother and now runs in your body like a programme nobody consented to install.
This is important work. The inherited wound is real, and reckoning with it honestly is one of the most significant things a practitioner can do — for themselves, and for the lineage they carry forward.
But there is another inheritance, and it tends to receive far less attention.
Your ancestors also passed down their gifts.

You lean in to extinguish it. You try again. The flame dips, recovers, steadies itself. You try a third time – and still it burns. There is a particular quality of uncanniness to this moment, something that makes even the most practically-minded person pause. It doesn’t feel like a malfunctioning candle. It feels like an answer. Across traditions – folk magic, conjure, ceremonial practice, and popular superstition – a flame that resists being put out is one of the most widely recognized candle omens. It is not a bad sign. In most readings, it is quite the opposite. But what it means depends on context: what you were doing when you lit the candle, why you are trying to extinguish it now, and what you were asking for. First, the Practical Question This is worth asking, and asking honestly, before reaching for a spiritual interpretation. Does the candle have an unusually long wick? Is it a particularly dense wax? Is there a draft in the room creating air currents that keep feeding the flame even as you try to smother it? Candle reading traditions – from Hoodoo to folk witchcraft to European ceremonial magic – all acknowledge the physical reality of candles. A skilled reader holds the mundane and the meaningful in tension, neither dismissing physical causes nor using them to reflexively explain away everything unusual. If you have ruled out the obvious, or if the phenomenon feels distinctly odd even with a normal wick and no draft, then you are in the territory of interpretation. The Core Meaning ~ The Work Is Not Finished The most widespread interpretation, consistent across multiple folk magic traditions, is this: the candle is telling you that the work is not complete. Something is still in motion. Something still needs to burn. In Hoodoo and conjure, candles are understood as living participants in a working. Not passive tools but active agents that communicate through their behavior. A flame that refuses to go out is typically read as a signal that the energy set in motion has not yet resolved. The fire has more to do. Extinguishing it prematurely would interrupt something that is still in process. The implication varies by intention: ~ If you lit the candle for healing or blessing, a flame that won’t die down often signals that the healing energy is still actively working. That something in you or in the situation is still receiving what was called in. The candle is finishing what you began. ~ If you lit it for manifestation or to draw something toward you, the persistence of the flame can indicate strong momentum. The spell or prayer is moving, and the fire is an expression of that movement. Let it complete if it is safe to do so. ~ If you lit it to release or resolve something, to end a situation, cut a cord, bring closure, a flame that refuses to die is more complicated. It can mean that the thing you are trying to release is not yet ready to go. There is still attachment, unresolved feeling, or energy keeping it alive. The candle knows before you do. The Flame as Spirit Presence A separate but related interpretation comes from traditions in which candle flames are understood as sites of spiritual presence. It lives in the red country of central Australia, in the knowledge held by Anangu elders, in the healing practices of ngangkari who work today in both remote communities and city hospitals, in the songs and stories and law that have been maintained across tens of thousands of years of continuous human presence on this continent.
Aboriginal Australian spiritual traditions are, by any reasonable reckoning, the oldest unbroken spiritual practices currently in existence.

What Projection Actually Is
The word gets used loosely. In ordinary conversation, “you’re projecting” has become an accusation, a rhetorical move in arguments, a way of saying you’re making things up about me. This usage misses the depth of what projection actually is . And misses, too, the humbling fact that it is not a flaw in certain people. It is a structural feature of human psychology.
Projection is what happens when a quality you cannot consciously hold in yourself gets expelled from your inner world and perceived, instead, in the outer world. The psyche does not destroy what it cannot accept. It exiles it. And then finds it everywhere else.
The projector genuinely sees what they believe they see. They are not lying. They are not making a calculated attack. They are, in a real sense, reporting their experience accurately. It is their perception that has been shaped by the contents of their own shadow. The person who cannot admit their own cruelty does not think to themselves, I am cruel, so I will accuse others of cruelty. They simply find themselves surrounded by cruel people. The mechanism runs below the threshold of awareness, which is precisely what makes it so powerful and so difficult to interrupt.

If there’s one tool that appears across more magical traditions than any other, more than candles, more than crystals, more than any specific herb – it’s salt.
Salt preserves. Salt purifies. Salt repels. Salt grounds. Salt marks boundaries. Salt has been used as currency, as offering, as weapon against the unseen, as the final act of consecration, as the thing you throw over your shoulder to break bad luck before it settles. Every culture that has had access to it has found it indispensable both in the kitchen and in the sacred.
But practitioners often reach for whatever salt is on the counter without thinking much about what they’re working with. Salt is not one thing. The type matters. Not because there’s a wrong choice, but because understanding what you’re using deepens the intention behind it.
Sea Salt
Harvested from evaporated ocean water, sea salt carries the energy of the ocean. Vast, moving, alive, connected to tides and moon cycles and the primordial waters from which life emerged. It’s excellent for cleansing and purification work, for rituals tied to emotion and intuition, for anything connected to the feminine principle or lunar energy.
