The Astronomy
August’s full moon reaches peak illumination late on the evening of August 27 across the western half of North America, and just after midnight on August 28 along the East Coast. A good reminder that “the same moon” rarely means “the same date” once you account for time zones.
This lunation carries extra weight. It’s paired with a partial lunar eclipse, the deepest of its kind visible before the end of the decade. Earth’s shadow will creep far enough across the lunar disk that the Moon takes on the reddish cast popularly known as a “Blood Moon,” without ever fully disappearing into totality. The eclipse begins in the late evening of August 27 and continues into the early hours of August 28, visible across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the eastern Pacific.
The name “Sturgeon Moon” comes from Algonquian-speaking peoples of the Great Lakes region, who noted that lake sturgeon, an ancient fish species virtually unchanged since before recorded history, were most abundant and easiest to catch during this part of late summer. As with all the traditional moon names still in circulation today, it’s worth remembering these were mnemonic and practical, tied to a specific ecosystem and a specific set of peoples, not a universal or ancient “pagan” naming system. A distinction we try to hold onto here rather than flatten for aesthetic convenience.

Every full moon sits in opposition to the sun, and this month that means a Virgo–Pisces axis. The sun’s methodical, discerning, in-the-body focus set directly against the moon’s dissolving, intuitive, in-the-unseen pull. It’s a genuinely useful tension to sit with rather than resolve too quickly. The discipline of Virgo without the permeability of Pisces curdles into rigidity. The receptivity of Pisces without Virgo’s structure has nowhere to land.
Lunar eclipses tend to intensify whatever a full moon already does – less a gentle culmination, more a forced one. Practitioners who work with eclipse seasons often treat them as points where something that’s been building for months (sometimes longer) reaches a threshold whether you feel ready for it or not. Pisces, as the final sign of the zodiac, adds a particular flavor to that threshold – less a hard ending than a dissolving one, where old structures don’t get dismantled brick by brick so much as quietly stop holding water.
