A deer in a summer field, head raised, the velvet-covered branches of new antlers catching the last light of a long July evening. He shed those antlers in the spring, as he does every year, and now they are back . Growing at a speed that is almost impossible to believe, up to an inch and a half per week, soft and warm with the blood that feeds them, more impressive than last year’s, larger than anything he has carried before.
He has not finished growing. The antlers are still in velvet, still forming, still accumulating what they will eventually become. But the direction is unmistakable. The growth is visible, daily, to anyone paying attention.

What the Buck Moon Carries
The full moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.
