Black Salt Banishing Spell

Clearing what no longer serves ~ make your own black salt and perform a full written-release working

Level: Intermediate
Type: Banishing
Best Timing: Waning moon, Saturday, or dark moon
Time Required: 30–45 minutes; black salt prep a day ahead
⚠ Important Warnings

Do not banish a person. You can banish an energy, pattern, or influence ~ but directing a banishing spell at a specific individual is considered aggressive magic with ethical and karmic consequences in most Magical traditions. Banish their influence, not the person.

Banishing can surface unexpected emotions ~ grief, anger, or relief. Have support available.

Fire safety: You will be burning paper. Use a fireproof cauldron or metal dish only. Never leave flames unattended.

Understanding Banishing Magic

Banishing is one of the most misunderstood areas of Magical practice. In reality, it is about removal with intention: clearing a habit, a negative energy pattern, an unhealthy attachment, or an unwanted presence from your life or space. It is not aggressive magic ~ it is closer to a deep spiritual clean.

At the intermediate level, you understand that banishing requires: clarity about what you are removing; a clean energetic foundation ~ banish from a grounded, protected space; and something to replace what you remove ~ nature abhors a vacuum.

Making Black Salt ~ Do This the Day Before

Black salt is made by combining coarse salt with charcoal ash or carbon residue from burned incense. It carries both the purifying power of salt and the absorbing quality of carbon.

Method: Mix roughly two parts salt to one part ash until uniformly grey-black. Charge it by holding your hands over the bowl: "Salt and ash, I charge you to absorb and bind all that should not remain. Be my instrument of clearing." Store sealed until the spell.

What You'll Need

  • Your prepared black salt
  • A black candle
  • Paper and a dark pen
  • A fireproof dish
  • Optional: black obsidian or smoky quartz crystal
  • Optional: dried juniper, mugwort, or rue ~ handle rue carefully as it can irritate skin

The Spell

Step 1 ~ Prepare and Protect

Ground and centre. Cast your circle. Light your black candle. Take three breaths and name ~ silently or aloud ~ exactly what you are banishing. Be specific: "I am banishing the pattern of self-sabotage that prevents me from finishing what I start." Specificity is power.

Step 2 ~ Write the Release

On your paper, write your release as a declaration in past tense: "The pattern of _______ has been released from my life. It no longer has power here. I am free of it." Below this, write three ways your life looks different without it.

Step 3 ~ Speak the Banishing Words

Hold the paper in your dominant hand. Look at the candle flame. Say the words below with firm authority ~ not fear, not anger.

By waning moon and dark of night,
I call this energy to the light.
What no longer serves, I name and release.
You have no hold. You have no place.
I reclaim this ground. I reclaim this space.
Be gone. Be gone. Be gone.

Speak with conviction and authority
Step 4 ~ Burn and Salt

Light the paper from the candle flame and place it in your fireproof dish. Watch it completely ~ your witness completes the release. Once cooled to ash, sprinkle with black salt. Stir counterclockwise three times (widdershins ~ the banishing direction).

Step 5 ~ Dispose of the Remains

Take the ash and black salt mixture outside ~ dispose at a crossroads, in a bin away from your home, or flush it. The key is: away from your space, with finality.

Step 6 ~ Fill the Space

This step is essential. Light a white candle and state what you are inviting in: "In the place of fear, I invite courage. In the place of this pattern, I invite ease and clarity." Let this burn for at least 20 minutes.

After the Spell

Cleanse your space thoroughly ~ smoke, salt water, sound, or all three. Open windows. Watch for shifts over the following two weeks. Banishing tends to work through physical circumstances shifting ~ an opportunity to break a habit appears, a situation resolves naturally.

⚖ On the Ethics of Banishing

The Wiccan Rede ~ "An it harm none, do what ye will" ~ is your north star here. Clearing your own energy, patterns, and space harms none. Directing banishing at a specific person crosses a line. If you are unsure, sit with it for 24 hours before casting. Clarity and ethical certainty make magic stronger, not weaker.
