Shadow Work by Candlelight

A structured inner ritual using mirror work and free-writing to illuminate what has been kept in the dark

Level: Intermediate
Type: Shadow Work
Best Timing: Dark moon, waning moon, or any night you feel called inward
Time Required: 45–60 minutes; ongoing journalling work afterward
⚠ Psychological Safety ~ Please Read

Shadow work is among the most emotionally powerful practices in the witchcraft tradition. It can surface grief, shame, fear, anger, or long-buried memories.

Do not attempt this ritual during an acute crisis, while severely depressed, or while intoxicated. Do not begin shadow work if you have a trauma history without some form of therapeutic support already in place.

Have grounding activities ready after the ritual: a warm meal, a bath, a walk, a phone call with a trusted friend. Know your exit.

What Is Shadow Work?

The shadow refers to the parts of yourself that you have hidden, suppressed, disowned, or judged as unacceptable ~ the anger you were told wasn't ladylike, the ambition you were shamed out of, the grief you never had space to feel. The shadow is not evil. It is simply what was put in the dark.

Shadow work is the practice of deliberately turning toward those parts, seeing them clearly, and integrating them ~ not to become them, but to stop being secretly controlled by them. An unfelt anger doesn't disappear; it becomes passive aggression, illness, or sabotage. A disowned ambition doesn't fade; it becomes resentment.

What You'll Need

  • A black or dark purple candle
  • A white candle
  • A journal and pen ~ use one dedicated to this work if possible
  • A mirror (small is fine)
  • Optional: smoky quartz, obsidian, or black tourmaline
  • Optional: protective incense ~ frankincense, sandalwood, or cedar

Preparation: The Shadow Prompt

Before the ritual, choose one shadow prompt. You are not trying to address everything at once. Choose one that genuinely stirs something in you ~ discomfort, resistance, recognition:

  • What quality in others irritates me most? (Often something disowned in yourself.)
  • What am I most afraid others would discover about me?
  • What do I judge most harshly in other people?
  • Where in my life do I give my power away?
  • What do I want that I have never admitted out loud?
  • When do I feel most like a fraud?

Write your chosen prompt at the top of a fresh journal page before the ritual begins.

The Ritual

Step 1 ~ Create Sacred Space

Light your protective incense if using. Cast a simple circle or simply speak: "I create this space as safe, held, and protected. Only what serves my highest good may enter this work." Light the black candle: "I light this flame to see clearly what I have kept in the dark. I approach with courage and compassion." Place the white candle nearby but not yet lit.

Step 2 ~ Ground Deeply

More than in any other working, grounding matters here. Take at least five minutes. Feel your feet, your seat, your breath. Visualise roots reaching deep into the earth. Say: "I am held. I am safe. I can look."

Step 3 ~ Face the Mirror

Sit with your small mirror and look into your own eyes. Not at your appearance ~ into your eyes. Hold this for two minutes. This is uncomfortable for most people. That discomfort is the beginning of the work. Notice what arises. Don't fix anything. Just look.

Step 4 ~ Write Without Stopping

Set a timer for 15–20 minutes. Open your journal to your chosen prompt. Begin writing and do not stop until the timer ends. Do not edit, do not cross out, do not re-read as you go. The rule: pen does not leave page. If stuck, write "I don't know what to write" until something else comes.

Step 5 ~ Witness and Acknowledge

When the timer ends, read back what you wrote slowly, as if reading about a person you want to understand. Then speak aloud:

I see you. I have kept you in the dark,
but you have always been part of me.
I am not afraid of you.
You do not need to hide any longer.
I am listening.

Spoken to the part of yourself that wrote those words
Step 6 ~ Light the White Candle

Light the white candle from the black candle's flame. This does not erase the shadow ~ it illuminates it. Say: "What was hidden is now seen. What was feared is now known. I carry all of myself forward."

Step 7 ~ Close With Gratitude and Grounding

Extinguish both candles. Close your circle. Say: "This work is complete for now. I return to ordinary life, carrying what I have learned." Give yourself at least 30 minutes of gentle transition.

After the Ritual ~ Integration

The ritual is an opening, not a conclusion. In the days after you may notice the named pattern appearing more visibly, dreams that continue the work, unexpected emotions arising at odd moments, or a strange lightness as if something has been set down. Continue to journal regularly.

💜 A Word on Compassion

The shadow is not your enemy. Every part of you that ended up there went there for a reason ~ usually a protective one. Shadow work done with self-compassion is profoundly healing. Shadow work done with self-loathing is just more suppression with extra steps. Come to this work as a curious, kind witness ~ not a prosecutor.
