New Moon Intention Spell

Planting seeds in the dark ~ a gentle, sustainable monthly practice

Level: Beginner
Type: Moon Magic / Lunar Ritual
Best Timing: New moon night, or within 24 hours after
Time Required: 15–20 minutes
⚠ Warnings & Notes

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Burn paper in a fireproof dish only ~ never hold burning paper in your hands. If candles aren't practical, a battery-powered candle works fine; intention is the engine, not the flame itself.

This spell sets personal intentions only ~ do not write intentions that involve controlling another person's choices or behaviour.

What Is the New Moon For?

In Wiccan practice, the lunar cycle is one of the most fundamental rhythms to work with. Each phase carries a distinct energy ~ and the new moon, when the sky is dark and the moon invisible, is the time of beginnings. It is the moment before the breath, the pause before the first word. Magically, it is the ideal time to plant intentions, set new goals, and call in what you wish to grow.

Think of it as spiritual soil preparation. You are not casting a dramatic spell ~ you are whispering something into the dark and trusting it to grow toward the light.

This is one of the gentlest and most sustainable magical practices a beginner can build. Even if you do nothing else, working consistently with the new moon each month will deepen your connection to natural cycles and your own intuitive wisdom.

What You'll Need

  • A black or dark blue candle (white works perfectly too)
  • A small piece of paper and a pen
  • A fireproof dish or cauldron
  • Optional: moonstone, labradorite, or clear quartz
  • Optional: a journal dedicated to moon work

The Spell

Step 1 ~ Ground Yourself

Before anything else, take three long, slow breaths. Feel your weight in your seat. If you have a crystal, hold it in your non-dominant hand. You are transitioning from ordinary time into sacred time. Even 60 seconds of stillness makes a meaningful difference.

Step 2 ~ Write Your Intention

On your piece of paper, write a single intention for this lunar cycle. Keep it present tense ("I am open to new creative work" not "I want to be creative"), positive ~ what you are calling in, not pushing away ~ and specific enough to feel real, broad enough to allow magic room to work. One intention is more powerful than five.

Step 3 ~ Light the Candle

Light your candle and speak your intention aloud. Your voice anchors the magic in physical reality. Say it simply, clearly, as if telling a trusted friend.

Step 4 ~ Charge the Paper

Hold the paper in both hands. Close your eyes. Visualise your intention as already real ~ not wished for, but present. See yourself in it. Feel the emotion of it. Hold this for as long as feels natural.

Step 5 ~ Release It

Option A ~ Burn it. Set the paper alight in your fireproof dish. Releasing it to flame symbolises surrendering the intention to the universe. Watch the smoke carry it upward.

Option B ~ Keep it. Fold the paper three times toward you and tuck it under your candle, beneath your pillow, or in a journal. Read it each morning until the full moon.

Step 6 ~ Close

Blow or snuff the candle. Say simply: "It is done. So mote it be."

It is done. So mote it be.

Spoken at the close of the ritual

After the Spell

Check in with your intention at the full moon, two weeks later. What has moved? What has appeared? What surprised you? The full moon is your harvest check ~ not a moment to cast again, but to notice and give thanks.

Keep a simple moon journal. Over six months, patterns will emerge. You will begin to understand which intentions land quickly, which take longer, and what the moon consistently illuminates in your life.

🌙 A Note for Sceptics

If part of you doubts whether this works, that's fine ~ doubt doesn't disqualify you. What a new moon intention practice undeniably does, regardless of your beliefs, is ask you to get quiet once a month, clarify what you want, and commit it to writing. That alone changes things.
