Drawing Down the Moon
Full lunar invocation ~ opening yourself as a vessel for the Goddess, with thorough closing instructions
Do not attempt this if you are emotionally or mentally destabilised, recently bereaved, or in any kind of acute crisis. Invocation amplifies your inner state before it elevates it.
Aspecting ~ genuine experience of divine presence moving through you ~ can be disorienting, physically intense, and emotionally releasing. Approach it seriously.
Always close the invocation fully (see Phase Five). Failing to properly close can leave you feeling spacey and emotionally porous for days.
Outdoor working at night: tell someone where you are. Have a phone, be in a safe location, and bring warm clothing ~ you may lose track of temperature and time.
What Is Drawing Down the Moon?
Drawing Down the Moon is one of the most iconic practices in Wiccan tradition ~ a ritual of invocation. Not calling upon the Goddess, but calling her into you, allowing her presence to move through your body, voice, and consciousness.
In traditional Gardnerian and Alexandrian Wicca, the High Priestess draws down the lunar Goddess and may speak as her, a form of temporary, willing divine possession called aspecting. In solitary practice, the ritual becomes a deeply personal experience of alignment and communion.
Do not attempt this as a first or second magical working. Come to it when you have a settled practice, a reliable grounding method, and some experience with invocation.
Preparation
Deepening Your Relationship With the Goddess
In the weeks before, begin a practice of simply sitting with the full moon. Go outside. Let the light fall on you. Talk to her as you would to a teacher you deeply respect. Ask questions you don't know the answers to. Listen. The invocation is a deepening of relationship, not a cold call.
Choosing Your Aspect
At the full moon, you are most often working with the Mother aspect ~ fullness, radiance, creative power. But you may also feel drawn to:
- The Huntress (Diana/Artemis) ~ fierce independence, wild instinct, sovereignty
- The Moon Queen ~ authority, vision, the power that illuminates darkness
- Your specific tradition's Goddess ~ work with what is alive for you
Know which aspect you are invoking before you begin. Clarity of invocation produces clarity of experience.
What You'll Need
- Your full ritual setup: cast circle, called quarters, deities invoked
- A chalice of wine, water, or juice
- A white or silver candle
- A wand, if you use one ~ or your dominant hand
- A mirror, if working alone
- Your journal, placed outside the circle for immediate use after
- Comfortable, loose clothing ~ or sky-clad, if that is your practice
The Ritual
This must be your most complete, careful ritual preparation. Cast the circle, call the quarters, invoke your guardians. Light your silver candle. Hold the chalice. Stand facing the moon. Take 5–10 minutes simply being in the circle. Let the ordinary mind settle. You are preparing the vessel before filling it.
Raise your arms toward the moon. Say the invocation below slowly, with complete sincerity. Pause between phrases. Feel each word.
I call to you, Great Goddess, Lady of the Moon.
You who are the silver wheel, the tides, the blood.
You who hold the darkness and are not diminished by it.
You who are mother, huntress, keeper of mysteries.
I am your daughter / son / child.
I open my body, my mind, my voice to receive you.
Come, Lady. Come to this place.
Come to this willing vessel.
Draw down the moon ~ let it be me.
Lower your arms slowly. Close your eyes. Breathe the moonlight in ~ visualise the light entering through the crown of your head with each inhalation, cool and silver. Let it fill your chest, move down your arms, settle in your belly. You are not trying to produce an experience ~ you are making space for one to arise. Stay here as long as it holds. Do not force it. Do not perform it.
If you feel moved to speak, do so. Some practitioners find that words arise that are more than their ordinary voice ~ perhaps the voice of the Goddess herself, perhaps the deepest wisdom of their own unconscious. Let what needs to be said, be said. You may wish to speak the Charge of the Goddess ~ the classic Doreen Valiente version is widely available; adapt it or use your own words.
Stand again, arms slightly raised.
Great Goddess, I thank you for your presence.
Your light has been in me, and I am grateful.
Now I ask you to withdraw gently,
leaving me whole, leaving me yourself,
leaving me blessed but firmly myself.
Return to the sky. Return to the great wheel.
I release you, with love and gratitude.
The vessel is once more its own.
So mote it be.
Close carefully and completely. Thank and dismiss the quarters. Thank the guardians. Open the circle. Take down the ritual space methodically.
After the Ritual
Expect to feel quietly, deeply altered for some hours. This is normal. Do not drive or engage in anything requiring sharp attention immediately after.
Write in your journal before sleeping. Over the following days, pay attention to what shifts. Drawing Down the Moon tends to produce clarity on questions you have been carrying.
